Art me in the Garden......

I managed to snap some pictures of my garden this past weekend, and since so many of you asked that I continue sharing; so here they are!
This is taken from the back steps to give you a "panoramic" view you can see our temporary "bridge" which Bill replaced the day after I took these.  I plan on adding a "Beware of Trolls" sign :)

These lion faces are from a square pot that didn't survive the winter.  I'll have to post a new picture because I ended up not using the checkerboard layout.......

Our lettuces are almost ready for harvest- fresh salad anyone?

This is one of the two heirloom roses Bill got me for our 19th anniversary- I LOVE it!

 The Jackmanni doin' their thing....

Foxgloves working hard to keep up....

On my list of "someday" is to replace this hidious mailbox.  I want a hammered Copper one-
maybe for Christmas?

Weekly Challenge at Inspiration Avenue "Mother"

The challenge this week at Inspiration Avenue was "Mother" and to be truthful, I really didn't think I'd have anything to submit  between trying to get ready for my art classes and wanting to finish my self portrait..... BUT, my cat and bluebird provided me with a story that could have been tragic but ended up being funny.  Just so it's out on the table, I'm just the kind of person these things happen to!  About ten minutes before my first class, I was in the garden just gathering my thoughts and my cat Latte came up to me with a male bluebird in his mouth.  My first thought was oh sh*t he's dead......but then I realized he wasn't.  SO I started screaming at the cat and throwing anything I could find, gumballs sticks- you name it, I threw it!  But the blasted cat wouldn't drop his "prize"!  All I succeeded in was chasing him into the storm drain at the side of the house.
Now remember, I'm currently waiting for students and their Mommies to arrive- I haven't met them all before AND I like to make a good first impression.  SO, I'm wearing some cute white capris and a pretty silk shirt, AND I'm now running (in flip flops) down a muddy, smelly root infested storm drain still screaming at the top of my lungs!   I finally managed to get the cat to drop the bird and the bird was stunned but managed to fly away and *I* managed to compose myself and ended up having a great class.
BUT, the next day, I didn't see both of my Bluebirds- just the male.....so now I'm wondering if Latte had caught the FEMALE and she was too much in shock to recover.....I'm kind of obsessive about my birds :) anyway, I kept watching but never saw her that day.  But there was one egg in the nest, and the male was still hanging around so I didn't completely lose hope. Finally, I thought to do some research to see if I could find anything promising.
I'm also REALLY impatient ;)
I found out the when female bluebirds are in their egg laying mode, they lay one egg a day and then stay away until it's time to lay the next egg....this continues until it's time to incubate the eggs.  So in the end, both my bluebirds are alive and well, as am I if a little bit crazy......Mama's now sitting on the nest and ALL of my cats are now sporting the very loudest bell collars I could find.
Hopefully I haven't bored you with my bird obsession!  I DO have one more story to share about birds and mothering..... yesterday, I was admiring my Mama Bluebird poking her nose (beak?) out of the house, and I heard some Blue Jays. And then I noticed a pair of them flying in and out a tree right next to our house- so now we have a blue jay nest too!  My favorite Blue Jay story is about a pair of bratty teens who'd very recently fledged.  They were sitting in a tree squawking again and again; waiting for Mom or Dad to bring them some food.  One of the parents (we'll call her Mom, 'cause in my head this was SUCH a Mom thing to do:))  flies into the tree, but really low where they teens can't see her.  They continue their noisy cries and finally Mom has had it with them.  She flies into the tree and conks both of her brats on the head with her beak, squawks at them and then flies away without having fed either of them.  I guess that was her way of pushing them into the real world.......:D
That's one of my all time favorite bird stories- and I DO feel I must add that I'd never conk one of my own bratty teens over head, but I might occasionally give 'em a swat on the butt......
Be sure to stop by Inspiration Avenue, I KNOW there will be tons of beautiful "Mother" inspired images to look at!
Happy Sunday,
Stephanie

Paint Party Friday- April 15th!

It's paint party Friday again and you know what that means!  It's time to share a painting, new, old in progress.  For this week, I focused on getting my self portrait done, and it mostly is.  My plan is to put it on hold for a week or so then go back for final touch ups.  I'm feeling a wicked tulip craving so, that's what's up for next week.  For now; here's my self portrait:
My current thoughts on this piece:
  • obviously the koi need a bit more shading- the trick is going to be knowing when to stop, as I want them to be somewhat abstracted
  • happy with the background- I'm loving my swirls!
  • one thing that I want to allow to "percolate" in my brain is how many flowers to keep on the robe......
And that's about it for my thoughts on this piece...
Be sure to stop by Paint Party Friday to see what everyone else has been working on this week!
Happy Friday,
Stephanie

And so the art classes have begun.....

Watercolor Explorations.....
Yesterday was the first day of my art classes, and we had SO much fun!  I'd remembered being thrilled by the amusing things that get said in class, but there's nothing like living it!  We had robot impersonations, talk about drawing blindfolded (their interpretation of blind contours) and so much more!

We started by exploring with watercolor washes and adding salt to see what would happen.....

Played with my watercolor pencils doing wet on wet, dry on wet and dry on dry with added water......they were amazed at the possibilities- I was too!

I wish I gotten pictures of them doing their blind contours- I always enjoy their disbelief when I tell them what we're going to do and when it turns out as wonderful as I knew it would.....ah well, maybe next time.

Our first "serious" project featured this beautiful orchid- that's what they did the contour drawings of- first small in their sketchbooks and then HUGE- the paper's almost as big as they are!
pay attention to the shapes of everything- the petals, the leaves those swirly roots.......
 everyone's SO focused

drawing big and tall- make that flower FILL the paper!

So for next week, they will go over their contour drawings heavily with white oil pastel and paint them with a watercolor resist- this is one of my all time favorite projects- it always turns out so beautiful for everyone!
Cheers,
Stephanie

Paint Party Friday- April 8th!

Eeeeee!  It's Paint Party Friday again, and I'm SO jazzed!  I've had a blast meeting people each week and discovering some really amazing (new to me) art!  For this week, I've been working on my Sketchbook for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Sketchbooks- my new and first round robin.  I felt really behind in beginning because I had a really hard time finding the right book to use.  Who would have thought it'd be so hard?  But, we have very specific requirements to meet, so it had to; have 60+ pages (we each get 4 to work with) and had to accept multi media.  The first one I got was wonderful for mixed media with really heavy duty watercolor paper- but, alas, it only had 50 pages.....the second I got online from Dick Blick and they promised that it was great for mixed media, well the paper was about the thickness of printer paper, so, no go.  On my third try, I FINALLY found a book at Sam Flaxx that actually met both requirements, so on Monday, I was ready to go!!!
Luckily during my trials of finding a book to work with, my brain was going overdrive with ideas for the cover, sign in and "all about me" pages.  You guys saw the beginning of the "me" spread with my self portrait last week.

For the cover, I turned to one of my favorite sources of inspiration; Gustav Klimt
And while I'm not quite done with the sign in pages, I have enough to show.  I love interactive art, I'll probably do at least couple of pop ups in the sister's books as they come to me.  In the meantime, my sign in page consists of 12 squares that flip up for the ladies to write their names, where they live and which month they did a spread for.
So that's my Paint Party Friday entry for the week- now I'm off to PARRTTAY!  Hope to see you there :D

Art me in the Garden

We have had some crazy weather these last couple of weeks- alternating between beautiful and the last bits of Winter.  I'm not complaining though, so many of my friends are still getting their last tastes of snow for the year!  Anyway, Sunday was glorious and my garden thriving, so I took some pictures.
I love this shadow on the chair- and the Azalea behind it was one of the few plants in the yard when we moved here almost 4 years ago

Some of you might remember the dry creek we started last year- well, I finished it last month

along with finally digging in this pond.  Now all we need is the right pump, some koi and a couple of water lilies and that too will be finished.  Please excuse all the lovely pollen floating in the pond......it comes with the season and until there's a pump and filter......

I love this sweet little coral bells tucked in here

my Jackmanni clematis- just getting ready to explode

path to my front garden- with nasturtium, delphinium and a pot in front of the clematis

So that's what's going on in my garden- soon there will be roses and foxgloves and so much more- I can't wait!  I think it might even be better than Christmas!
I hope all you are seeing the beautiful beginnings of Spring where ever you may be!
Cheers,
Stephanie

Weekly Challenge at Inspiration Avenue: "Self Portrait"

As I said before, the weekly challenge at Inspiration Avenue is to do a self portrait.  Yesterday, I worked on this for hours, and hours to the point that while I still like it, it is time to set it aside for a bit to let it "speak" to me and tell me where it needs to end.  I hope that makes some kind of sense!
Anyway, I'm still happy with it, I just don't want it to become forced or over thought:)
So, without further ado, here is a bit more of my self portrait:
On my personal "to do" list for this
  • the fan needs to be cream colored
  • more white swirlies- I LOVE doing these!
  • decide- koi or flutterbys in the little squares- they represent my children
  • more cherry blossom on the branches
Stop by Inspiration Avenue to see what everyone else did- I personally can't wait!
Happy Saturday!
