Paint Party Friday- June 3

YAY!  It's Paint Party Friday again and I've started a new painting that I can share with you!  I actually enjoy sharing WIP's because they look so different on the monitor.  And here, I must say, that I was pretty happy with this yesterday but now that it's up on said monitor, not so much....it's also for Inspiration Avenue's challenge- "Over the Rainbow"

and I've tentatively named this, "Off to Meet the Wizard"....I'm sorely tempted to paint a tiny emerald palace in the distance and make that swathe of empty lime green meadow (which I quite liked yesterday and HATE today....) into a field of poppies.....I'll not be changing my ladies dress and tho' you can't tell here, she's in the act of putting on a necklace.
I've wanted to do a painting of a woman putting on a necklace ever since I got this book:
"Kissing Games of the World" by Sandi Kahn Shelton- the cover has this image on it:
which I've been wanting to to use in a painting ever since.  However, bowing to copyright laws and a lack of ideas, I never did anything with it until now....(by the way, I can't really recommend this book, I started it but never finished it- got bored about halfway through ;))
What pulled this together is the fact that I've been rather down recently and kind of hiding in my own skin.....so I needed to paint it and hopefully lose this "Don't LOOK at me feeling"...that I sometimes get- anyone else ever feel that way?
Anyway, it's been very therapeutic for me and now that it's up on the blog, I know more where it needs to go:
  • Obviously, she needs hands, hair and a necklace ;)
  • the path blends too much into the flowers- needs more definition
  • her skin tone still isn't where I want it
  • the arch isn't quite right
  • sky needs to be touched up- especially the bits coming from behind the arch
  • to add an emerald palace or not?
And PLEASE feel free to add suggestions- I'm am completely open to constructive crittisism!

That's what I've got for Paint Party Friday this week- be sure to check it out; last week we had more than 60 artists participate!
I'm off to the party, see you there!
Stephanie

FOLLOWUP:  Here it is after I worked on it today...added the poppies and changed the hair- may or may not have the necklace- and I think NO on the castle.  Thanks for all the great suggestions!
I'm still wanting to do more on the garden and touch upsin general.....but pretty happy with it over all.
XO
Stephanie

I just love her Stephanie. Lime green is also my favorite color but coupled with red poppies.....wow! That would be way over the top and fantastic.

For some strange reason-I never get depressed. I think it has to do with the fact that I've had so much sorrow in my life that when I wake up to "no problems" I rejoice-smile-laugh-sing and swim (my favorite thing to do outside of art) As you know, it will pass.

Ha - I'd do well to get rid of the LOOK at me feeling I have. I am a Leo show off! I like the painting but agree that maybe something on the green field I like the ideas of poppies! ♥ Rosie

I think it is a lovely painting so far and I really like the flowers and path. I know what you mean about the empty horizon. Although Wizard of Oz is one of my all time favourite films, I wouldn't recommend the emerald city but how about the path twisting back around through the green field and leading off into a forest of trees which would break up the horizon?

I can't wait to see the details of the lady putting on her necklace and I just love the archway - its that idea of passing through from the possibly mundane and discovering a whole new exciting world!

Oh, and thanks for your comment - its my friends birthday next weekend and I'll be giving her the portrait then so after that I'll be able to post it on my blog!

It is a very romantic .... And I think you can paint the girl putting on the collar, if you say where you draw your inspiration. Greetings

I love this painting, the dress is gorgeous. I don't know if I would add the palace but maybe some distant trees, as was mentioned before, would be nice. I think it is a beautiful take on the theme.

I think you have an excellent concept and have begun very nicely;strong drawing, and composition. So given time, it should develop nicely. I find working with photographing my artwork and posting it is challenging because the colors and depth are not obvious and different monitors make it look completely different but it has also, helped me in pushing for stronger color, values and contrasts.
Thanks, for sharing. Happy PPF.

Hi Stephanie, as a newbee to art I cannot give constructive criticism, but I do agree with Pointy Pix opinions and her reasons why. This is such a beautiful picture already and am really looking forward to seeing it completed.
So my friend stop hiding in the trees you are a beautiful person with a wonderful talent.
Enjoy the weekend, Annette x

I think it's a great piece. Love the soft colors she is wearing, and the brightness of the other side. Great work. Happy PPF!

Hi Stephanie..absolutely beautiful!! wow....what a wonderful piece..she is so elegant and peaceful..i almost love that I have no knowing of what is on the other side of that..and what she is about to walk towards...I feel sparked wiht magic and mystery!

Your painting is Mega-fabulous already....and if you really feel there is something ahead in the scene..i say close your eyes and be still.....in time you will feel what is calling you..and you will see what is supposed to be there...be patient..the pantning is speaking..it feels very alive..and I know it will absoutely tell you...when divine...what is to appear there!

I am sorry you are not feeling all sparkly and well right now..hang tight..shine on...things will uplift soon...and that magical piece you are waiting on in the painting.is coming into place...!!

Shine on friend...I cannot wait to see what transpires!!

I like the negative space you have there in the sky. I think if it were mine, I'd leave the emerald city out of it. The space allows some calmness to the painting, I think. I love the graceful movement you've implied with her arms. Looking forward to what you decide to do ;)

Isn't it weird how you see paintings completely differently on the monitor? I love the arch and her filmy green dress. It's going to be lovely!

I'm sorry that you have been feeling rather down lately, Stephanie. That really can overpower everything.
When I saw your painting first before reading your words I thought the lady is in England, at one of those old big mansions with these enormously beautiful gardens around them. Where the garden softly blends into the English countryside with its rolling hills and green meadows. Definitely a good mood landscape, that gave me exactly that good feeling. Then I read your post and asked myself "why does she beat herself up? Why doesn't she see how beautiful this painting is?" You are so hard on yourself, Stephanie. And if my may add: please, no emerald palace.

Hmm, I think maybe leave the Emerald City. Poppies are a nice idea though. Exciting stage - so much can happen. I know the end result will be amazing.

Well, let's see...you have the rainbow field of flowers leading down the yellow brick road...just the tiniest emerald building in the distance might add the perfect touch of lightheartedness. I may be in the minority on that, but I think it could work :) You would be able to pull it off, Steph! I love how the arch, and the path are leading the eye right out and up...

So sorry you have been feeling blah lately. Maybe it's something in the stars ~ we are both Tauruses, and I've been feeling like that too. Plus, I actually feel better now! Weird, eh?

It does look a bit like a meadow leading to the field of poppies in the Wizard of Oz. I see this as a very romantic piece, something I don't associate with Oz.

I see a calla lily, do you?
It is a gorgeous image!!

I think just something indistinct on the horizon, let the viewer decide what she sees in the distance.

I love her pose, she could be putting up her hair too.

I think it's beautiful right now. I like your idea of the poppies, though. The arch is gorgeous, Stephanie! I LOVE it as is.

I'm sorry you've been feeling down lately. I read another comment that said you were a Taurus. Me, too! Maybe it's just our Blue Taurus period. I hope your spirits are lifted very soon!

I have a weak spot for portraits of backs. They are so lovely and not done often enough. Love the addition of the poppies too!

Red hair & translucent green dress, a match made in heaven! Love the framing of the model & the arch leading our eyes to the explosion of wonderful colours up the path, I really like this work, gorgeous!

I quite like your piece and think her body is so well proportioned and lovely. Thank you for showing your inspiration, it helps to see how different artist interpret the pieces that inspire them. I think it is coming along lovely and can't wait to see what you put in the horizon line.

The poppies were a good instinct and the added definition to the path really added contrast to her form and dress. Love the hair color!

I love when you post your WIPs! It is so great to get a glimpse into how other artists think and get their inspiration... I really enjoy how you seem to work things out within the post very cool!

(I really like the subtle heart that emerges in the shape of her back)

Feel better soon...

This piece is gorgeous Steph! Hope it has cheered you up working on it!

Hi Stephanie☺
Funny how you were inspired by a book cover and ended up with nothing of the sort. I had a thought (which you can/should totally discount) but I will say it anyway...I love her back...how would a small tattoo on her shoulder look? a dragonfly? Since this feels like a self portrait of sorts...you venturing into the uncomfortable-ness of your journey. Love you Girlfriend♥♥♥

how lovely! And so interesting to read your thought processes..I've timed it perfectly to see the added poppies and hair...beautiful! I love the arch too and how some of the leaves shimmer...I'd love to go through an archway like that into an enchanted world :) Glad its lifted your spirits..can't beat a bit of art therapy! xx

Ha! I've had an invisibility condition for years! Actually, it is quite convenient for an artist; no one knows I am observing them!
I think it is going great. I like the pale blue of her skin tone, and you arch (they are so difficult) looks good to me. About the emerald city: do it if you want to nail down the wizard context. The poppies are a good thing. Nice!

Great job on the painting! Coming in late I got to see the before and after at the same time. I liked the before, too, but the after looks really lovely.
